WASHINGTON — Storms early Thursday morning caused major damage in a Fairfax County community and thousands of power outages around the region.
The Belle View neighborhood of Fairfax County is cleaning up debris after a storm rocked the area, causing trees to tumble and block lanes and, in some cases, fall into houses. There are several downed power lines, too.
Crews with chainsaws in hand are removing the trees and noting areas where power lines are down with yellow caution tape.
No one was injured, officials say. It is not yet clear how much damage the storm caused residents in Belle View.
“The hail was scary,” said one woman who lives in the neighborhood. “I had my flashlight, so I went out and was looking at the hail wondering if it would break the windows.”
Fairfax County is one of the areas where power outages persisted Thursday.
The storms caused one school to changes its plans. Belle View Elementary School doesn’t have power and students were bused to West Potomac High School to finish out the school day.
Buses will dismiss from West Potomac and that’s where parents need to pick up their kids.
